In 2018 the International Baroque Days of Melk Abbey, today one of the internationally most renowned early music festivals, celebrated their 40th anniversary. Director Volker Werner’s documentary focuses on the unique connection between the festival and Melk Abbey. Here a modern cultural institution meets the centuries-old religious living space of the monastery. By including eminent figures like Helmut Pilss, Alexander Hauer and Michael Schade, the documentary takes us on a journey from the present day to the beginnings of the Pentecost concerts and grants an unexpected look behind the scenes.

Grafenegg: Midsummer Night’s Gala 2018
Stars by starlight in the traditional Midsummer Night’s Gala! Two of the great voices and one of the best cello virtuosos of our time promise a musical firework at the Wolkenturm: the South African soprano Pretty Yende and the Maltese tenor Joseph Calleja, both celebrated across the world of opera, and the Dutch cellist Harriet Krijgh, with her irrepressible delight in making music. These are the famous guests with whom the Tonkunstler Orchestra and their Music Director Yutaka Sado greet the summer solstice in Grafenegg with a musical festival for all the senses.
Bregenz Festival 2018: The Hunting Gun
A world premiere at Bregenz Festival: Thomas Larcher has adapted Yasushi Inoue’s best-seller The Hunting Gun for his first opera, with a libretto by Austrian Book Prize winner Friederike Gösweiner. It tells the story of three women, who speak in three letters addressed to the same man, a hunter – his wife, his lover and his lover’s daughter. As the women react to the revelation of illicit love, the hunter’s life is laid bare. Award-winning Austrian actor and film director Karl Markovics gives his debut as stage director for an opera.
Salzburg Festival 2018: L’incoronazione di Poppea
In his first opera staging, Jan Lauwers shines new light on Monteverdi’s Incoronazione di Poppea at the Salzburg Festival. His ‘Gesamtkunstwerk’ captures the dizzying power games between Poppea and Nerone, superbly performed by Sonya Yoncheva and Kate Lindsey, while striking imagery is created by the SEAD Salzburg Experimental Academy of Dance and the BODHI PROJECT. Salzburg Festival 2018: The Bassarids
“A completely gripping new production” (FAZ): 52 years after their premiere, Hans Werner Henze’s “The Bassarids” return, with Kent Nagano at the helm, to the Salzburg Festival for a rare revival of this modern classic in a highly dramatic psychological staging by Krzysztof Warlikowski. When Dionysus bursts into the intact world of ancient Thebes, he plunges it into chaos. In the gigantic three-part set of Malgorzata Szczesniak the captivating tale unfolds like a film using split-screen techniques. With “an ensemble that without exception has an outstanding cast”, the musical realization is “simply sublime” (Der Standard).
Peer Gynt
In this story ballet, choreographer Edward Clug merges the distinct versions of Peer Gynt by Edward Grieg and Henrik Ibsen into a new ballet experience. “A brilliant narrator” (Kronenzeitung), Clug captures the fantastic adventures of the boastful peasant boy, who sets off to become emperor of the world, with the help of the bold stage and costume design by Marko Japelij and Leo Kulaš. The result are “magical scenes, never seen like this in conventional ballets” (Kurier) with “an outstanding cast, down to the smallest roles” (Opernfreund).
Salzburg Easter Festival 2018: Tosca
Anja Harteros excels in the title role of Michael Sturminger’s cinematic staging of Puccini’s “Tosca”, the centrepiece of Salzburg Easter Festival. Aleksandrs Antonenko compellingly portrays Cavaradossi, while Ludovic Tézier is a thrillingly malevolent Scarpia. Christian Thielemann leads the Staatskapelle Dresden. “Tosca” is a political thriller with a heart-breaking love story that gives a vivid account of the harassment of artists, political persecution, torture and arbitrary executions. In Salzburg it is set in the Mafiosi world of modern day Rome and is “the perfect thriller … reminiscent of Scorsese’s ‘Goodfellas’” (Kleine Zeitung), a “film noir” (FAZ).
Silent Night – A song for the world
Silent Night – A Song for the World is a documentary about the creation and success of the world’s most famous Christmas Carol – a song composed in 1818 in Salzburg, which has been translated into 140 languages, which stopped World War I at Christmas, which should become the third best selling single by Bing Crosby. In short: A song for the world! The film tells the story of the creation of the Christmas Carol and features world stars like Rolando Villazón, Kelly Clarkson, Joss Stone and David Foster, who share their personal Christmas experiences in their home towns and perform Silent Night in various languages.
