Stars by starlight in the traditional Midsummer Night’s Gala! Yutaka Sado conducts a programme of arias and duets, with a firework display set to «Pomp and Circumstance».
Salzburg Easter Festival 2018: Tosca
Anja Harteros excels in the title role of Michael Sturminger’s cinematic staging of Puccini’s “Tosca”, the centrepiece of Salzburg Easter Festival. Aleksandrs Antonenko compellingly portrays Cavaradossi, while Ludovic Tézier is a thrillingly malevolent Scarpia. Christian Thielemann leads the Staatskapelle Dresden. “Tosca” is a political thriller with a heart-breaking love story that gives a vivid account of the harassment of artists, political persecution, torture and arbitrary executions. In Salzburg it is set in the Mafiosi world of modern day Rome and is “the perfect thriller … reminiscent of Scorsese’s ‘Goodfellas’” (Kleine Zeitung), a “film noir” (FAZ).
Donizetti, La Favorite
“Each note a masterpiece”, said Arturo Toscanini of Donizetti’s La Favorite. Something of a seldom-performed rarity today, it was rarely out of the Paris opera repertoire in the decades that followed its premiere. It is considered one of the composer’s most cogent works of music drama and shows Donizetti at the height of his powers as an orchestrator. The opera is the first original French opera by the Italian bel canto composer – a happy congruence of the Italian and French operatic traditions.
La Gioconda
Amilcare Ponchielli’s La Gioconda, presented by the Teatro di San Carlo, in a co-production with the Gran Teatre del Liceu of Barcelona, presents a stellar cast under the baton of Pinchas Steinberg: Anna Netrebko, here in one of the most complex roles in the repertoire, shows “her vocal ability with an absolute mastery of her instrument” (Bachtrack). Ludovic Tézier’s Barnaba, “exhibited brilliant ease in every nuance of tone, register and phrasing” (Bachtrack) and Jonas Kaufmann’s Enzo proved his great presence and vocal skills. Romain Gilbert’s stage direction and the excellent performance from the orchestra fullfilled the expectations of a great production.
The Forbidden City Concert – Carmina Burana
