Yo Yo Ma – The Goat Rodeo Sessions
The Goat Rodeo Sessions is an ambitious and groundbreaking project that brings together four string virtuosos: world-renowned cellist Yo-Yo Ma, fiddler Stuart Duncan, bassist Edgar Meyer and mandolinist Chris Thile. While each artist is a prominent figure in his own music sphere, they have come together as a unified ensemble on a most remarkable and organic cross-genre project. The music, including two tracks with female vocalist Aoife O’Donovan, feels both new and familiar – it’s composed and improvised, uptown and down home, funky and pastoral and above all, uniquely American. Till Brönner plays AVO Session
The German jazz musician Till Brönner has a unique jazz approach influenced not only by bebop and fusion jazz, but also by modern pop music, movie soundtracks, country music and even German pop songs. His trumpet playing is primarily inspired by the listening experiences of Freddie Hubbard and Chet Baker. In March 2007 he produced ‘The jazz album’ for legendary classical singer Thomas Quasthoff, featuring pianist Alan Broadbent and drummer Peter Erskine. His album RIO, with featured guest vocalists Vanessa da Mata, Kurt Elling, Melody Gardot, Annie Lennox, Aimee Mann, Sergio Mendes, Milton Nascimento & Luciana Souza was produced by Grammy winner Larry Klein in Rio de Janeiro and Los Angeles and is featured at this concert at Avo Session Basel.
The Wayne Shorter Quartet – Live in Paris
Wayne Shorter’s maxim is to reinvent his music in each concert, always again in the radical originality. After his legendary work with the Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers, the Second Miles Davis Quintet and his years with Weather Report in his year 2000, Wayne Shorter formed the Wayne Shorter Quartet, the first formation under his own name. This group provides him with the freedom to reinvent and form his music always again. He sees the celebrated soloists Brian Blade, John Patitucci and Danilo Pérez less as sidemen but rather as equal elements of an organism. They call their method ”Zero Gravity“, an original state of music which they always re-conjure in the interaction, and which is the basis of their explorative journeys into new musical territory. Hugh Masekela feat. Mahotella Queens plays AVO Session
Before jazz had a name and “world music” was a concept, a young trumpet player emerged from another hemisphere and landed alongside some of the greatest icons in American music. Louis Armstrong sent him a trumpet. Harry Belafonte arranged for him to come to New York City to study music. That man, Hugh Masekela, born out of apartheid South Africa , has consistently toured worldwide and his genre-bending dynamism has led to his own icon status. The Mahotella Queens were far more than just a female chorus: their velvety voices, their charisma and their sense of show and stage were an essential element in the band.
