This performance by the MSO stands apart – firstly, as Sir Andrew Davis’ farewell performance after six years as Chief Conduct, and secondly, as the Australian premiere of Davis’ own orchestration of Handel’s classic which has been nominated at the 2018 Grammy Awards. The all-Australian cast of soloists including soprano Shiobhan Stagg – “sparkling all night“ – (Herald Sun) and tenor Topi Lehtipuu sing excellently, the well-prepared MSO choir performs masterfully.

On the occasion of his anniversary year the Philharmonic Five bring Beethoven‘s timeless music to life in the extraordinary venue of teamLab Tokyo, the world’s first digital art museum on 10,000 square meters. Some 520 computers and 470 projectors power the digital artworks, which completely transform their physical space using animated graphics, colour and light. The Philharmonic Five, four soloists from the ranks of the Wiener Philharmoniker together with one of the most prolific pianists of our time, combine their sound aesthetics, the art of phrasing and virtuosity with a modern, powerful dynamic of expression and reinvent classical music. The arrangement in film and jazz music style emphasize Beethoven’s truly innovative spirit, and above all his talent for improvisation and his way of anticipating jazz and film music elements long before their birth. In the space of teamLab the Philharmonic Five create a completely new sensory and auditory impression of his oeuvre.
The Odeonsplatz Concert: Gergiev conducts Beethoven
The Odeonsplatz Concert is entertainment of the highest standard, given the world class of the artists and the quality of the programs presented here year by year. This time Valery Gergiev and the Münchner Philharmoniker present an all Beethoven programme including the Coriolan Overture and the monumental Fifth Symphony, which “becomes a profound, heroic triumph, fabulous, stunning” (Süddeutsche Zeitung). Franz Lehar: The Land of Smiles
Staatskapelle Dresden; Staatsopernchor Dresden Top-class soloists, the Staatskapelle Dresden and the Sachsischer Staatsopernchor Dresden present highlights from Lehar’s popular operetta The Land of Smiles. Besides a bittersweet love story, the piece offers one of the greatest operetta hits: “Dein ist mein ganzes Herz”. According to conductor Christian Thielemann “Operetta only becomes really good when it is performed at a very high level”, a challenge that the Staatskapelle Dresden together with Jane Archibald, Erin Morley and Pavol Breslik masters impressively.
Anne-Sophie Mutter, Yo-Yo Ma & Daniel Barenboim
The West-Eastern Divan Orchestra celebrates its 20th anniversary by giving a concert at the Berlin Philharmonie with world-renowned artists: Anne-Sophie Mutter and Yo-Yo Ma perform Beethoven’s Triple Concerto together with Maestro Barenboim and the young musicians. Yo-Yo Ma, who played with the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra at their first concert 20 years ago, and Anne-Sophie Mutter, who made her debut with the orchestra only this year, were named as honorary members of the orchestra on the occasion of this event. “It is fascinating to experience how brilliant, concentrated and at the same time relaxed these three world stars make music together and listen to each other. A masterpiece of harmony“ (RBB24). The second part of the concert features Bruckner’s 9th Symphony, transcendental music which the composer himself dedicated to “the dear God“. The symphony is unfinished not only because Bruckner died during the process of composition, but especially because it seems to perish in nothingness. Festive Advent Concert at the Frauenkirche Dresden 2019
The Festive Advent Concert has become a much loved tradition in Dresden and one of German TV’s biggest classical music success stories. With the spirited Alondra de la Parra a phenomenal young conductor stands at the rostrum of the Staatskapelle Dresden. She is joined by sopranos Regula Mühlemann and Julia Muzychenko as well as tenor Julian Prégardien, presenting works and arias from Handel to Haydn, Schubert and Tchaikovsky to Reger. “A programme with quiet, contemplative passages and almost breathtaking emotional highlights, as well as dramaturgically coherent: a true gift” (Sächsische Zeitung).

Beethoven Project – Ballet by John Neumeier
Mainly based on the “Eroica Variations” and Symphony No. 3, John Neumeier describes his idea of the Beethoven Project as follows: ” A choreographic poem inspired by Beethoven’s music, and perhaps by Beethoven himself.” Aleix Martínez – “a force of nature” (tanz) – dances the leading role as Beethoven at the Festspielhaus Baden-Baden. The dancers are phenomenal, a fantastic ensemble performance that can only succeed if a company dances at such a high level as the Hamburg Ballett.
