This 90-minute special tribute was produced to commemorate the 75th anniversary of Leonard Bernstein’s birth on 25 August 1993. Narrated by legendary screen star Lauren Bacall, it also relies extensively on Bernstein’s own words to provide the counterpoint to the abundant visual material. The special draws on the nearly 120 hours of programming with Leonard Bernstein produced exclusively by Unitel, as well as on material from the extensive Bernstein archives and earlier television ventures. Highlights include excerpts of Bernstein conducting masterworks by Beethoven and Mahler, as well as of the maestro with the New York Philharmonic in Moscow in 1959 before an audience which included composer Dmitri Shostakovich and the dissident poet Boris Pasternak. It also contains never-before-seen footage, such as outtakes from televised concerts and interviews. Among these special treats: the dashing 28-year-old maestro representing the U.S. at the 1947 Prague Spring Festival – possibly the earliest extant film of Leonard Bernstein.

The music of the quintessentially Czech composer Dvorák is, above all, enjoyable and is a perennial favourite in the Romantic repertoire. This series of concerts is performed by the Prague Symphony Orchestra and Chorus and the Prague Philharmonic Choir, with three leading Czech conductors on the podium: Petr Altrichter, Jirí Belohlávek and Libor Pesek. Guest soloists include soprano Lucia Popp, alto Eva Randová, tenor Josef Protschka, bass Peter Mikulás, pianist Igor Ardasev, violinist Ivan Zenaty and cellist Mischa Maisky. VOLUME VI includes the world’s famous Requiem.

This recital of Kathleen Battle, taped in the Temple of Dendur at the Met Museum in New York. Kathleen Battle presents a selections of famous songs and arias by Gershwin, Handel, Mozart, Strauss and Obradors as well as some spirituals.
Oedipus Rex
This ambitious production uses a number of striking visual elements including a massive set that floats above a reflecting pool, huge puppets and sculptures. The noted Butoh artist, Min Tanaka, dances the role of Oedipus, and is joined by twenty dancers to portry this classical tragedy.

Dvorak in Prague: A Celebration
Some of classical music’s most renowned performers come together in the beautiful Old World setting of Prague to celebrate the work of the Czech Romantic composer Anton Dvorak. Yo-Yo Ma, Itzhak Perlman, opera singer Frederica Von Stade, and Rudolf Firunsky are soloists in performances of several of Dvorak’s most moving works. The Prague Philharmonic Chorus and the Boston Symphony Orchestra provide the lush background music, and the entire extravaganza is overseen by conductor Seiji Ozawa.
Horowitz: A Reminiscence
After Horowitz’s death Wanda was interviewed for this production. Also included are segments of the 1974 footage including excerpts from Clementi’s Sonata in F-sharp minor and complete performances of Scriabin’s Vers la Flamme, op. 72 and Chopin’s Introduction and Rondo, op. 16) and segments from “The Last Romantic.”
Pavarotti: Live in Central Park
