The Fiery Angel
The young Renata hears voices. Since childhood, she has been visited by a fiery angel exuding a sublime radiance. Besotted with him, she goes looking for him when he leaves her and meets Ruprecht, a knight who, out of love for her, will try to tear her away from this carnal possession. Moving from tavern to convent, against a backdrop of spiritualism and exorcism, collective hysteria and burlesque humour, The Fiery Angel is a powerful piece that has it all, bordering the very limits of expressionism. Inspired by the symbolist novel of the same name by Valery Bryusov, this opera is Prokofiev’s most striking operatic masterpiece. Its premiere at the Festival d’Aix see it transported into the tumultuous world of director Mariusz Trelinski, while Prokofiev’s score resounds to the baton of Kazushi Ono conducting the Orchestre de Paris. “Masterful and very inspired direction by Kazushi Ono, who transmutes an Orchestre de Paris of stunning sonic beauty” (Le Monde); “The Fiery Angel at Aix-en-Provence Festival – a benchmark performance!” (Financial Times)
Il palazzo incantato
Il palazzo incantato (The Enchanted Palace) by Luigi Rossi (1597-1653) has not been performed since its premiere in 1642. In Dijon, Leonardo García Alarcón and Fabrice Murgia bring back to life this unique work with singers, dancers and comedians. The libretto was written by Giulio Rospigliosi, who would later become Pope Clement IX. It is an adaptation of Ariosto’s Orlando furioso, a chivalric epic considered one of the great masterpieces of Italian literature and set to music by numerous other composers like Handel and Vivaldi as well. “A remarkable work of intelligence, and powerfully poetic” (Le Monde).
Camille Saint-Saëns – The elusive composer
The film follows the life of a man who is said to have been a revolutionary for 40 years and then a conservative for 40 years who considered Debussy, Ravel, Stravinsky and Webern (among others) as naughty punks… However, as a composer and a pianist Camille Saint-Saëns was incredibly talented in music as in various sciences and arts. The film contains archive material, original drawings, musical excerpts and interviews with specialists, with a light comment made from Saint-Saëns’ personal writings as if he commented himself some parts of his long and rich life.
Zéphyr
Dance against the wind: French choreographer Mourad Merzouki sails towards a new adventure in the direction of the “Everest of the seas” – the sailing race Vendée Globe. After Vertikal, which propelled hip-hop into the air, Merzouki continues to exalt this dance in a play with natural forces: from weightlessness to the breath of the wind, from vertical to horizontal, he performs a 90-degree rotation and imagines a new poetics of space in which a gentle wind of lightness blows from the west: the Zephyrus. César Award winner Armand Amar (“Le Concert”) wrote the music. “A great fresco on life […] And the magic works.” Le Figaro
Daniel Harding – The Inaugural Concert: Schumann Scenes from Faust
For his inaugural concert as the new Musical Director of the Orchestre de Paris, the young British conductor Daniel Harding chose to conduct a work with which he has already enjoyed phenomenal success in Berlin, Munich and London: Robert Schumann’s rarely performed Szenen aus Goethes Faust (Scenes from Goethe’s Faust). A Magical evening in the Parisian concert hall, with an aesthetic excellence that leaves you speechless.” (Huffington Post) “For his inauguration concert Harding lands a coup.” (Le Figaro)
Paris: Harding conducts Schumann “Paradise and Peri”
Daniel Harding, the new music director of the prestigious Orchestre de Paris, pays homage to Schumann through one of his most radiant works: Das Paradies und die Peri (Paradise and the Peri), an adaptation for orchestra, choir and soloists of an oriental tale and a jewel of romanticism. Matthias Goerne, Christiane Karg, Andy Staples, Kate Royal, Gerhild Romberger and Allan Clayton join Harding and the Orchestre de Paris in a worldly Oratorio that exalts the heavenly purity of paradise in the shimmering and magical colours of Arabian Nights.
