Till Brönner plays AVO Session
The German jazz musician Till Brönner has a unique jazz approach influenced not only by bebop and fusion jazz, but also by modern pop music, movie soundtracks, country music and even German pop songs. His trumpet playing is primarily inspired by the listening experiences of Freddie Hubbard and Chet Baker. In March 2007 he produced ‘The jazz album’ for legendary classical singer Thomas Quasthoff, featuring pianist Alan Broadbent and drummer Peter Erskine. His album RIO, with featured guest vocalists Vanessa da Mata, Kurt Elling, Melody Gardot, Annie Lennox, Aimee Mann, Sergio Mendes, Milton Nascimento & Luciana Souza was produced by Grammy winner Larry Klein in Rio de Janeiro and Los Angeles and is featured at this concert at Avo Session Basel.
Jethro Tull plays AVO Session
Formed in 1968 the music of Jethro Tull is marked by the distinctive vocal style and lead flute work of front man Ian Anderson. Initially playing blues rock with an experimental flavour, they have, over the years, incorporated elements of classical, folk and ‘ethnic’ music, jazz and art rock. With 60 million albums sold and over 2500 concerts played in 40 countries, the band continue to record and perform, typically 100 shows to around 300,000 people each year throughout all the major rock and roll territories of the world. Their debut record, “Betcha Bottom Dollar”, was the fastest selling jazz debut in Britain on its release, also debuting at number 2 on the US jazz charts and in the Top 10 of Billboard’s Heatseekers chart. Hugh Masekela feat. Mahotella Queens plays AVO Session
Before jazz had a name and “world music” was a concept, a young trumpet player emerged from another hemisphere and landed alongside some of the greatest icons in American music. Louis Armstrong sent him a trumpet. Harry Belafonte arranged for him to come to New York City to study music. That man, Hugh Masekela, born out of apartheid South Africa , has consistently toured worldwide and his genre-bending dynamism has led to his own icon status. The Mahotella Queens were far more than just a female chorus: their velvety voices, their charisma and their sense of show and stage were an essential element in the band.
