Corps

Hans van Manen’s Corps takes its inspiration from Alban Berg’s elegiac Violin Concerto and reflects the ‘longing for’ and ‘taking leave of’ expressed in the music. The nervous restlessness and often aggressive pattern of the movements capture the impotent rage invoked by the death of a loved one. The corps de ballet plays a leading role, interacting with twelve male dancers and three female dancers. This performance by the Dutch National Ballet was recorded in studio and Gidon Kremer is the soloist with the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra conducted by Sir Colin Davis.

In Rehearsal: Christoph von Dohnanyi

Featuring some of today’s leading conductors in rehearsal, this series gives a unique

insight into the process of creating great music. The conductors’ very different styles and

methods; the dialogue between an orchestra and an inspired interpreter; the intensity of the

preparations for a concert performance; and the struggle towards perfection are captured in these

revealing audio-visual records. Most episodes include a full run-through of the work rehearsed.

All include interviews with the conductor who is seen at work. Pierre Boulez rehearses the Vienna

Andris Nelsons conducts Shostakovich – Symphony No. 4 & Strauss, Flothuis

Andris Nelsons continues his Shostakovich series with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra with the Fourth Symphony. This complex symphony of gigantic proportions was written during the period when Dmitry Shostakovich had been relegated from the status of a national hero to that of a potential enemy of the state by Stalin. When rehearsals for the Fourth proved disastrous, Shostakovich decided to withdraw the work. Even today, though, the Fourth Symphony is performed relatively rarely, perhaps because of the great challenge it poses to both conductor and orchestra. Before the interval, the RCO’s very own principal violinist Liviu Prunaru and its principal cellist Gregor Horsch excelled in Brahms’s Double Concerto, his final orchestral work.

The Complete Mozart Violin Concertos

On the occasion of the MPHIL 360° festival, Valery Gergiev brings together at the Philharmonie im Gasteig the Münchner Philharmoniker, the Mariinski Orchestra and five highly promising young violin talents: Vilde Frang, Sergej Dogadin, Alexander Conunova, Yu-Chien Tseng and Daniel Lozakovich. Together they perform all five of Mozart’s violin concertos. An impressive encounter of excellent musicians, who “show off in questions of virtuosity” (Süddeutsche Zeitung). Once again, “Musicmaniac” Gergiev’s motto is “‘Think Big!’ Success proves him right” (Münchner Merkur).

Mozart: Sinfonia concertante for violin and viola

The Mozart cycle of the MPHIL 360° festival in 2016 was complemented by the Sinfonia Concertante for Violin & Viola, with violinist Lorenz Nasturica-Herschcowici and viola player Yuri Afonkin. An impressive encounter of excellent musicians, who “show off in questions of virtuosity” (Süddeutsche Zeitung).

Violin Concerto in D op.35

Hailed by the press as “the definitive video production” of Tchaikovsky’s music, this exceptional concert series, recorded live from the Alte Oper Frankfurt, features the leading Russian conductor Vladimir Fedoseyev and the Moscow Radio Symphony Orchestra. Fedoseyev’s perceptive reading of the works of his fellow countryman, the masterly playing of the orchestra and guest soloists combine to produce performances which are revelatory in their execution and understanding of Tchaikovsky’s music and the Russian heritage.
