Die Entführung aus dem Serail

Barcelona’s Teatre del Liceu presents Mozart’s singspiel in an elegant production by Christof Loy with a splendid cast of top stars headed by coloratura soprano Diana Damrau in her debut at Spain’s largest and most distinguished opera house. Damrau’s “charismatic stage presence announced… that we were in the presence of a great singer”, wrote Opera News. Starring along with Damrau are Olga Peretyatko, Christoph Strehl, Norbert Ernst and Franz-Josef Selig. Christof Loy portrays Konstanze and Blonde as having developed profound feelings of respect, admiration and even love for their captors.

Der Rosenkavalier

“The best of the best assembled on stage,” wrote Germany’s leading newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung after the premiere of Richard Strauss’ Der Rosenkavalier at the Festspielhaus Baden-Baden. Indeed, it would be hard to find a more ideal cast for this late-Romantic Rococo pastiche anywhere in the world. As the Marschallin, stellar soprano Renée Fleming uses her velvety tones and autumnal shadings to complement the youthfully lyrical and dynamic voice of Sophie Koch as her young lover Octavian. Diana Damrau’s Sophie enhances the trio’s sparkle with her ethereal high notes. Next to Franz Hawlata as a swaggering Baron Ochs and the always impressive Franz Grundheber as Faninal, the Baden-Baden production rounds off its male leads with international tenor star Jonas Kaufmann as the “Italian Singer.” Leading his Münchner Philharmoniker, acclaimed Romantic specialist Christian Thielemann revels in Strauss’s lustrous melancholy and obtains a rarely heard transparency from the brass and woodwinds.

Le nozze di Figaro

For the 225th anniversary of Mozart’s death, La Scala Theatre presents a new production of Le nozze di Figaro that had been entrusted to the extraordinary director Frederic Wake-Walker (author of a production of La finta giardiniera which was the revelation of the Glyndebourne Festival in 2014). He focusses the action of the piece on the instability of love: “Le nozze di Figaro presents us with an impossibility – a world where everyone is loving and forgiving.” The approach to his direction is “elaborate and very innovative” and “also musically, the new production of Figaro is worth a tour to Milan.” (NZZ) “the cast is magnificient.” (Kurier) “… when Diana Damrau enters as the Countess, we get a performance of special gravitas. Even the orchestra, under Franz Welser-Möst’s baton, melts to such grace.” (Financial Times)

Die Entfuehrung aus dem Serail

Barcelona’s prestigious Gran Teatre del Liceu presents Mozart’s beloved Singspiel in an elegant, dramaturgically twisted production with a sparkling cast of top-rank international stars headed by coloratura soprano Diana Damrau as Konstanze and rising star Olga Peretyatko as Blonde. Stage director Christof Loy has conjured up a thought-provoking and strikingly original scenario in which both Konstanze and Blonde are feeling respect, admiration and even profound love for their captors. The result is a tantalizing approach that overturns the traditional patterns of good and evil.

Mozart, as well as Antonín Dvorák’s Symphony No. 8. Dedicated to the genius of Mozart, the first half of the concert kicks off with the overture to Don Giovanni, played with gusto by the RCO and Thomas Hengelbrock, an expert in historically informed performance practice. Diana Damrau’s “L’amerò, sarò costante” is a sincere declaration of love while the concert aria “Bella mia fiamma, addio” is a dramatic farewell letter to a loved one which the singer performs with great passion. The programme is rounded off by Antonín Dvorák’s Symphony No. 8, an exuberant ode to the great outdoors.

Festive Advent Concert at the Frauenkirche Dresden 2017

The Festive Advent Concert has become a much loved tradition in Dresden and one of German TV’s biggest classical music success stories. Christian Thielemann and his Staatskapelle Dresden present a programme ranging from the overture of Bach’s orchestra suite D major to Mendelssohn Bartholdy’s Christmas Cantata “Vom Himmel hoch”, Mozart’s Laudate Dominum, excerpts of Haydn’s Die Schöpfung (The Creation) and traditionals. German star soprano Diana Damrau with her “gorgeous and richly coloured timbre” (Sächsische Zeitung), the “brilliant” Helmut Fuchs on trumpet and the “very impressive” Choir of the Sächsische Staatsoper (Dresdner Neueste Nachrichten) create a festive concert experience together. The clear, enchanting soprano of Tuuli Takala blends perfectly with the beautiful, high baritone of Benjamin Appl, winner of the Gramophone Young Artist of the Year Award.

Diana Damrau – Diva Divina: Nine Months With The German Opera Star

She is simply one of the best singers in the world,’ proclaimed the New York Sun triumphantly after another of Diana Damrau’s spectacular performances at the Metropolitan Opera. And while The Guardian gushed: ‘The German soprano…has become a cult figure,’ the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung noted succinctly: ‘Whoever says coloratura says Damrau.’ In private moments with her parents and her first teacher, Damrau talks about her childhood and youth, about her discovery of opera while watching TV, her early career and her international breakthrough in 2002 in roles such as Donna Anna and Zerbinetta. The film portrays an exciting, high-intensity, fast-paced jet-set life tempered by the harmony of a rewarding family life with her husband, her parents and, at the end of the film, with her brand-new baby!
