Der Freischütz

Christian Räth’s inspired staging of Der Freischütz, Weber’s seminal Romantic opera, at the Haus am Ring stands out due to the bold set and costume design by Gary McCann. To win Agathe’s hand, the young assistant forester Max has to pass a test of skill in marksmanship. The desperate lover, in order to win the shooting contest, resorts to the use

of magic bullets. With his “magnificent Heldentenor”, Andreas Schager offers “a convincing portrait” and Camilla Nylund’s Agathe arias are “captivating poetry” (Kleine Zeitung Steiermark).

Der Freischütz

Axel Köhler’s production of Der Freischütz at the Dresden State Opera was described by Die Presse as “a minor miracle in Dresden”. In the words of the Salzburger Nachrichten, Köhler “scored a bulleye” with his sombre and satanic interpretation of Weber’s Romantic opera about love, temptation, souls sold to the Devil, obsession andfaith. According to the Financial Times, Christian Thielemann and the Dresden Staatskapelle conjured up a sense of “mortal terror from the orchestra pit. […] Thielemann is in command of every detail. That makes for utterly gripping listening.”

Arabella

A “lyric comedy” is how Richard Strauss and Hugo von Hofmannsthal described their final collaboration, on which they worked between 1927 and 1929. Arabella revolves around the true

love between two very different couples – the love that unites two people forever “in joy and sorrow, hurt and forgiveness”, as Arabella herself puts it at the end of the opera. With Renée

Fleming in the title role and a supporting cast that includes Thomas Hampson, Gabriela Benacková and the young tenor Daniel Behle – surely a star of the future – this production from the Salzburg Easter Festival was the first of the piece at the Festival since 1958. Under the Strauss specialist Christian Thielemann, it featured a Strauss ensemble that could hardly be bettered today. Renée Fleming and Thomas Hampson are a “dream couple for Richard Strauss” (Salzburger Nachrichten).

Enoch zu Guttenberg conducts Bach’s B Minor Mass

Any performance of Bach’s monumental Mass in B minor is a special occasion, and so it proves with this 1998 performance filmed in the magnificent setting of the Wieskirche, the pilgrimage church of Steingaden Abbey near Schongau in Bavaria, a dazzling example of the exuberance of the late German baroque. Enoch zu Guttenberg brings a lifetime of love and engagement with Bach with him to conduct the and the Neubeuern Choral Society and the Orchester der Klangverwaltung with a special combination of authority and passion, which extends to the outstanding line-up of soloists. The result is truly a peformance to treasure.

Salzburg Festival 2025: Oedipus Rex

Under Esa-Pekka Salonen, the Wiener Philharmoniker perform Stravinsky’s Oedipus Rex with explosive power. The stellar cast includes Allan Clayton, Marina Viotti, Michael Volle and Academy Award winner Christoph Waltz, who “performs this speaking role with subtle restraint” (BR Klassik). The concert also features Berlioz’s Symphonie fantastique “in a performance where everything is just right” (Der Standard). PROGRAM Stravinsky: Oedipus Rex; Berlioz: Symphonie fantastique

The World Of The Ring

Christian Thielemann, the most soughtafter Wagner conductor of our time, looks into the story behind one of the most ambitious opera projects of music history: the genesis and reception of Wagner’s “Der Ring des Nibelungen” – in a four-part documentary by film director Eric Schulz.

Elektra

Richard Strauss’s “Elektra” is an Expressionist masterpiece that shakes the listener to the core with its powerfully expressive chords, spooky waltzes and mad dance of triumph. The orchestra is so rich that only the finest orchestras can do full justice to this work, such as the Münchner Philharmoniker here under Christian Thielemann, in a production by Herbert Wernicke recorded at the Festspielhaus Baden-Baden. Topping the superb cast are Linda Watson in the title role, Jane Henschel, Manuela Uhl, Albert Dohmen and René Kollo.
