RCO: The Four Seasons – Vivaldi & Piazzolla
The concert gives people from different cultural backgrounds the chance to soak up the atmosphere of the classical concert hall. The programme features an exciting mix of Italian Baroque with Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons and Argentine passion in the master of tango Astor Piazzolla’s own Four Seasons of Buenos Aires. Both the orchestra’s principal violinists, Vesko Eschkenazy and Liviu Prunaru, have been given the wonderful job of conveying, together with their fellow musicians, the shimmering quality of both idioms. Mariss Jansons conducts Richard Strauss
‘ALSO SPRACH ZARATHUSTRA’: from the symphonic poems that brought Richard Strauss worldwide fame in the 1880s and 1890s and his florid operas from the first decade of the twentieth century to the resigned metamorphosis of his final masterpieces after the Second World War. In this production, Mariss Jansons is seizing the opportunity to pay tribute with this work, considered to be one of his specialities, to that other big name from the orchestra’s early history. Also on the programme: Strauss’ METAMORPHOSEN and the SUITE FROM DER ROSENKAVALIER.
RCO: Mäkelä conducts Ravel, Bartók, and Connesson
The Concertgebouw Orchestra, conductor Klaus Mäkelä and two of the orchestra’s soloists transport you to distant worlds. Fairy tales by Ravel and Bartók and two works by the contemporary sound wizard Guillaume Connesson: four pieces of music to take in visually. Antonio Pappano conducts two works in which love leads to lunacy: Berlioz’ Symphonie fantastique and Jake Heggie’s song cycle, Camille Claudel: Into the Fire, featuring mezzo-soprano Joyce DiDonato. Musical tales of boundless passion and madness come to life. Hector Berlioz explored his obsessive love in the Symphonie fantastique. Joyce DiDonato sings Into the Fire, Jake Heggie’s bittersweet song cycle about the French artist Camille Claudel, whose affair with her associate Auguste Rodin proved to be her undoing. Such a programme calls for a conductor who knows how to deliver drama in a perfectly measured way. Sir Antonio Pappano manages to lead the Concertgebouw Orchestra on this emotional roller coaster without going off the rails. RCO: Mäkelä conducts Strauss and Wagner
The chief conductor has traditionally led the orchestra in the Christmas Matinee – and now its future chief conductor, Klaus Mäkelä, assumes that role, leading the Concertgebouw Orchestra in a programme based on the theme of love. Wagner surprised his wife Cosima with the ‘Siegfried-Idyll’ on Christmas Day, 1870. Marital love also inspired Richard Strauss’s Ein Heldenleben, which he dedicated to the Concertgebouw Orchestra. Unsuk Chin’s subito con forza is a declaration of love for the music of Beethoven. It was with this same work that Klaus Mäkelä opened the programme he conducted on his Concertgebouw Orchestra debut in September 2020, when sparks between maestro and orchestra first flew. In the field of Bruckner’s symphonies, the Concertgebouw Orchestra has built up an enviable reputation.
