Since going on sale in November 2012, tickets for classical pianist Lang Lang’s solo recital at the Royal Albert Hall on November 15th 2013 sold out within 48 hours, a record for a recital by any classical musician at the venue in recent times. Mats Ek: Julia & Romeo
Romeo and Julia becomes Julia & Romeo when world renowned choreographer Mats Ek presents his full-length work to Tchaikovsky’s music, with its first performance of the Royal Swedish Ballet at the Royal Opera House. ‘It’s time to turn things around,’ says Mats Ek. Also, one of Shakespeare’s originals was in fact named Julia and Romeo. So you can say that this is a return to the story’s source. And to use the music of Tchaikovsky, and not Prokofiev’s, is also a signal. But the drama’s bearing conflict with the young unprotected love versus the established violence, is still there – a tragedy in which love triumphs by going under. Julia and Romeo is Mats Ek’s first major full-length works since Sleeping Beauty made for the Hamburg Ballet in 1996. Music by Pyotr Tchaikovsky, in the selection of Mats Ek, adapted by Anders Högstedt.

Conductor René Jacobs, highly-acclaimed specialist in the music of the 18th century, conducts this production of Mozart’s ‘Così fan tutte’ from the famous Aix-en-Provence Festival performed by the Concerto Köln, which has established a solid place amongst the highest-ranking orchestras for historical performance in the world.
Les Contes d’Hoffmann
This production from the Chorégies d’Orange Festival, one of the festivals with the longest and richest traditions in France, is directed by the French conductor Michel Plasson, whose interpretation of the operatic works by Offenbach, Gounod and Massenet were considered to be the most excellent of our time. Performing is baritone José van Dam, one of today’s most famous and sought after interpreters of the bass-baritone repertoire.
The Glory of Russia – Sound and Sights of Saint Petersburg
Renée Fleming, America’s Queen of Opera, performing with the internationally acclaimed Russian baritone Dmitri Hvorostovsky, in the Palaces of the Czars in Saint Petersburg. Fleming and Hvorostovsky lead the audience through Saint Petersburg performing in the Gold Ballroom of Peterhof Palace, the White Column Room and the extraordinary baroque Theater of the Yusupov Palace.
Jan Lisiecki – Night Music
Night: it can be dreamy or comforting, but sometimes it’s frightening, full of dark secrets. So it’s no great surprise that the long hours of darkness, often spent awake, have inspired so many composers to write some of their most touching works: Chopin’s dreamy Nocturnes, for example, Schumann’s dainty “Nachtstücke” or Ravel’s spinechilling cycle “Gaspard de la nuit”, populated by sinister figures and dark premonitions. In his piano recital at the Imperial Hall at the Würzburg Residence, the young Canadian pianist Jan Lisiecki, brings the spirits of the night, both good and evil, to life; in his hands, Ravel’s goblin “Scarbo” dances and the water sprite “Ondine” swims through the waves, dangerously seductive.
LSO: Rattle conducts Haydn “The Seasons”
The London Symphony Chorus celebrate its 50th anniversary with Haydn’s ‘nature’ oratorio The Seasons, a stellar cast of international singers and Sir Simon Rattle. The Seasons is divided in to four sections: Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter charting a musical year with rousing choruses, a riotous wine tasting with dancing peasants, a loud thunderstorm, even the croaking of frogs. In his old age Haydn achieved fame and fortune in London following visits here in the 1790s. ‘Papa Haydn’ was encouraged to write The Seasons by the great success of his previous oratorio The Creation, which was performed all over Europe.
