Christmas in the Erzgebirge is one of Saxony’s most treasurable cultural traditions. The region’s centuries old mining industry has produced a unique response to Christmas, which is celebrated by means of numerous customs in which music plays a decisive role. The Renaissance town of Marienberg at the very heart of the historic Erzgebirge is the setting for a concert of classical and seasonal works performed by Germany’s only classical orchestra made up exclusively of wind instruments, the Sächsische Bläserphilharmonie (Saxon Wind Philharmonic). 2CELLOS – Live at Arena Zagreb

The two young cellists, Luka Sulic from Slovenia, and Stjepan Hauser from Croatia, known as 2CELLOS, achieved sensational success by taking the cello to a new level and breaking the boundaries between different genres of music. Within only a week, this YouTube video became a huge viral sensation leading to an invitation to join Elton John on his worldwide tour.

Paths Through The Labyrinth – The Composer Krzysztof Penderecki
On the occasion of Penderecki’s 80th birthday in 2013, this film portraits the artist with a comprehensive ‘work in progress’ documentary: despite his growing age, Penderecki is still an unflinching and active composer and conductor. For one year, the author Anna Schmidt has been studying this world-famous artist, speaking also with high-carat companions: Anne-Sophie Mutter, Julian Rachlin and Janine Jansen, Mariss Jansons and Lorin Maazel; Johnny Greenwood (“Radiohead”) and Andrzej Wajda. The film follows Penderecki from Kraków to Munich, from Vienna to Leipzig, and on various occasions to his country estate in Luslawice. And throughout, the composer reflects on the meteoric beginning to his career, unexpected turning points in his life and ingenious ideas. Thoughts, dialogues, extracts from his music and film scores, encounters and the natural world all condense to create a fascinating, multi-layered portrait including also very rare archive material.
‘Fiesta del Tango’ from Buenos Aires
The most renowned stars of the Argentinean tango scene performing in the famous ballroom ‘El Palacio’ in Buenos Aires, where tango legend Carlos Gardel accomplished his greatest successes in the twenties and thirties of the last century. The tango show features ‘Otros Aires’, ‘Café de los Maestros’, former lead singer of the Astor Piazzolla Band, Teresa Parodi, and Rodolfo Mederos. After almost 30 years of traveling all around the globe they now, in their 99th world tour, play Mozart with the spirit, freshness and eagerness of their first concert. On the programme Mozart’s Final three Symphonies including No. 40, the first ever played symphony by Frans Brüggen and his band.
Thomas Quasthoff sings Soul – ‘Tell it like it is’
The German magazine Stern describes Thomas Quasthoff as ‘the man with the most beautiful voice in the world’. Furthermore, his power of interpretation and unerring sense of taste go hand in hand not only when performing Italian arias but also when singing famous American songs. After his performance and recording of ‘Tell it like it is’ at the famous A-Trane jazzclub in Berlin, ‘unbounded cheering’ (Die Welt) by the audience had the effect of singling out certain numbers. With each of their appearances in February 2010, Thomas Quasthoff and his hand-picked instrumentalists (Bruno Müller, guitar, Frank Chastenier, keyboard, Dieter Ilg, bass, Wolfgang Haffner, drums) worked their way deeper into these pieces of jazz and soul. Rudolstadt Festival 2016 – Anoushka Shankar
Anoushka Shankar was born in London but mainly raised in San Diego, California. She was seven when she first got lessons on the sitar from her prominent father, Ravi Shankar. She grew up with Indian classical music but also but western pop and youth culture which today results in her wish to cross borders and to free the sitar from its alleged limitations as an instrument for Hindustani classical music.
