Don Quichot

Don Quichot – an audience favourite of prestigious companies worldwide – is a dazzling display of high spirits, virtuosity and Spanish temperament. The flamboyant leaps, dizzying pirouettes and crisp pointe work that are standard features of the production give the performers every opportunity to show off their technical prowess. But at the same time, the comic story based on Cervantes’ masterpiece makes strong demands on the dancers’ acting abilities. The leading Russian choreographer Alexei Ratmansky has drawn inspiration for his production from the libretto of the first version of Don Quichot by Marius Petipa, created in 1869. The former artistic director of the Bolshoi Ballet and Artist in Residence of the American Ballet Theatre now has also added his own new elements and choreography to the ballet. The modern designs for the ballet, by the renowned French designer Jérôme Kaplan, refer to the times of Cervantes.

Ballet of Difference – ON BODY

The choreographer Richard Siegal, “sought-after worldwide as the most innovative, the most exciting dance-maker of his generation” (Süddeutsche Zeitung), sets out to cross boundaries with his new company Ballet of Difference, founded in 2016. With drive and virtuosity, exceptional settings and energetic sounds, the diverse troupe merges classical ballet tradition, contemporary dance and pop culture in an extraordinary dance event and forges a unique vision of ballet’s present and future. On Body is spectacularly opened by BoD, a work that celebrates dancing on pointe and the individual’s joy to dance. In Made for Walking pale colours and austere forms dominate the stage and robust boots replace the pointe shoes. It is followed by UNITXT, a trailblazing piece of contemporary dance, in which “Richard Siegal perfects seemingly impossible movements – you can hardly believe your eyes!” (BR Klassik). Wendung

“Schubert saw himself as a wanderer, as a guest on this earth. Many of his works mark the stations of his wanderings – phases of his roaming about in the darkness. For the immediate goal is death, but the later goal the immeasurable heaven he has carried with him in his mind’s eye since his childhood. The composer has varied and glorified this idea of death as the gentle friend of youth. And it comes through again in many of his movements, not only the slow ones, where this glorification and gracious melancholy are no less clear, even when it is only implied and seems secret. It is Schubert’s most profound acknowledgement of this life and the life to come.” (John Neumeier) The ballet was recorded at the Hamburg State Opera in the fall of 1979.

Concerto Barocco

Born in St. Petersburg in 1904, George Balanchine – his name was actually Georgi Melitonovich Balantchivadse – studied at the Imperial ballet academy. In 1924 he did not return to Russia from a European tour of Soviet star dancers. He worked as a choreograph for the Ballets Russes, founded by his fellow countryman Diaghilev, and, along with Igor Stravinsky, left his unmistakable mark on the evolution of the modern ballet. The world premiere of “Apollon musagète” in 1928 was considered as the beginning of the modern era in the ballet world. In 1934 Balanchine went to the U.S., where he first led the American School of Ballet and, in 1948, founded the New York City Ballet, which achieved international fame as “his” troupe. Of Balanchine’s more than 400 works, including the choreographies for musicals and operas, pieces such as “Serenade” (1934), “Concerto barocco” (1941), “The Four Temperaments” (1946), “Agon” (1957), “Violin concerto” (1972) and “Davidsbündlertänze” (1980) are regarded as masterworks of the dance in the 20th century. George Balanchine died in New York on 30 April 1983.
