This production of Bach’s “Christmas Oratorio” was recorded at two highly exceptional places: Palestine and Israel, the authentic, historical locations of the Christmas story. The recording of the work’s first three cantatas took place in the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem on Christmas Eve, and the second set of cantatas at the Evangelical Church in Jerusalem on Christmas Day. Conductor Riccardo Chailly leads the Zurich Opera’s acclaimed early-music ensemble along with a roster of top soloists. The program is interspersed with shots of various historical sites of Israel and Palestine.

Featuring some of today’s leading conductors in rehearsal, this series gives a unique insight into the process of creating great music. The conductors’ very different styles and methods; the dialogue between an orchestra and an inspired interpreter; the intensity of the preparations for a concert performance; and the struggle towards perfection are captured in these revealing audio-visual records. Most episodes include a full run-through of the work rehearsed. All include interviews with the conductor who is seen at work. Vienna Prater Picnic Concert 2025
The Wiener Symphoniker once again welcomed the summer with their yearly open-air concert in the heart of Vienna. For the fourth time, the Kaiserwiese – set against the iconic Giant Ferris Wheel – becomes the backdrop of a shared musical experience connecting generations, styles and stories. With a cross-genre programme combining operetta, musical, jazz and pop, the orchestra traces a lively Viennese tradition that has been bringing people together since the 19th century. Bass-baritone Thomas Quasthoff brought Frank Sinatra’s repertoire to life with his unmistakable voice, joined by soprano Alina Wunderlin, who moved effortlessly between classical music, operetta and jazz. Double bassist and composer Georg Breinschmid and his trio offered a jazz-inflected tribute to Johann Strauss, while singer-songwriter Lemo added a contemporary touch.
Vienna Prater Picnic Concert
With their Prater Picnic, the Wiener Symphoniker offer a very special open-air concert to their audience: visitors are invited to pack their picnic basket and enjoy a colourful concert on the Kaiserwiese in the Vienna Prater in front of the spectacular backdrop of the Vienna Giant Ferris Wheel. This year, under the musical direction of Dirk Kaftan, the Wiener Symphoniker, together with soprano Vera-Lotte Boecker and baritone Rafael Fingerlos, embark on a musical journey around the world to mark the 150th anniversary of the Vienna World’s Fair of 1873 – with works by composers of this era from Robert Stolz and George Enescu to George Gershwin, Cole Porter and John Lennon.
Salzburg Festival 2012: Ouverture Spirituelle – Nikolaus Harnoncourt
Nikolaus Harnoncourt places the emphasis on Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart in the Ouverture Spirituelle, featuring sacred music within the Salzburg Festival, by choosing two seldom heard works by the Salzburg-born composer. Together with the Arnold Schoenberg Choir and his Concentus Musicus Wien ensemble, the Mozart specialist conducts the Litaniae de venerabili altaris sacramento K. 243 and the Missa longa in C major K. 262 in the unique venue that is Salzburg Cathedral, a jewel of Baroque architecture. These two highly expressive works, written by the virtuoso composer when he was a mere twenty years old, were first performed in that very building. “Harnoncourt revealed the historic richness of Mozart’s Litanei … in the finest colours and dynamic shading”, wrote Die Kleine Zeitung. The Austrian baritone Florian Boesch and mezzosoprano Elisabeth von Magnus delivered their parts in especially sensitive manner. Jeremy Ovenden’s vocal line is truly elegant coupled with that of the ambitious Spanish soprano Sylvia Schwatz. “Ovenden’s attractive, bright tenor … his rhythm, diction and easy flexibility of voice are exemplary”, according to The Sunday Times. Rarely revealed tapestries from the prince-archbishop’s treasury were hung in the cathedral especially for this concert, in order to give a better impression of how the works might have sounded in Mozart’s day.

‘Hollywood in Vienna’ is the world’s first and unique redcarped film music gala concert, celebrating the most renowned film composers of our time. The annual gala combines an orchestral concert of highest musical level with guests from the dream factory and a Hollywood-like staging in the historical setting of the Vienna Concert Hall. Classical symphonic music known from today’s movies reaches a young and new target audience. On the programme works by Bruce Broughton, John Williams, Alan Silvestri, Erich Wolfgang Korngold, John Powell, Max Steiner and Nicholas Hooper.

Ödön von Horváth’s 1931 play “Tales from the Vienna Woods” takes a twisted view of Johann Strauss Jr’s 1868 waltz of the same title. During his lifetime, he considered
teaming up with Kurt Weil to make an opera of the work. Three-quarters of a century later, the Bregenz Festival has finally accomplished this job, by asking Viennese
composer Heinz Karl Gruber to write the opera – and “Gruber is a worthy substitute for Weil” states the Financial Times.
