Jonas Kaufmann echoes his own Christmas memories and joys, celebrating the most festive time of the year with a unique selection of beloved songs and carols. The concert is shot at the Silent Night Chapel in Oberndorf near Salzburg, the original place where the Christmas carol Silent Night, by Joseph Mohr and Franz Xaver Gruber, was performed for the first time on December 24th 1818. In addition, festive location shots at the Christmas market in Salzburg. The exclusive documentary „Jonas Kaufmann – a global star in private“ shows the opera singer „behind the curtain“ up close in his home in beautiful Bavaria. When Jonas Kaufmann is not on tour, he spends his free time there with his wife, the opera director Christiane Lutz and his four children. Music also finds its place in his private rooms and the opera singer uses the domestic inspiration for new productions. His longtime friends Alexander Klaus-Stecher and Judith Williams are also part of the documentary „Jonas Kaufmann – a global star in private“ and will be chatting away during lunch and the subsequent bowls at Kaufmann‘s house.
Hope for Prague
A special concert in a stunning setting: British violinist Daniel Hope, who studied under the legendary Yehudi Menuhin, performs Max Richter’s iconic composition “Vivaldi Recomposed”, a re-imagining of the Four Seasons, with the Epoque Orchestra on a floating stage on the Vltava against the backdrop of Prague Castle and overlooked by the imposing National Theatre complex. The concert also features the world premiere of a new version of Czech composer Bedrich Smetana’s “Vltava”, which is named after the river.
RCO: Mäkelä conducts Beethoven & Debussy
The concert is being led by the young Finnish conductor Klaus Mäkelä. He is conducting two undisputed highlights of the history of orchestral music, taking us on a journey over land and sea with Beethoven’s Symphony No. 6, the ‘Pastoral’, and Debussy’s “La mer”.

This approach limit the number of artists, technicians and backstage staff involved, in compliance with government regulations, while drawing on the endlessly rich repertoire of chamber pieces past and present. Using remote cameras, members of the audio and video crew are safely dispersed in different rooms. The third episode featuring Berlin-based oboist Albrecht Mayer and pianist Kimiko Iman.
