The Soundtrack to Liberty – From the French Revolution to fall of the Iron Curtain. Music can move, comfort and encourage like no other medium. Social upheaval and political songs have marched hand in hand since the French Revolution, probably even before then. Music is a tool for mobilisation. It is the embodiment of the ideals and the hope for a better life. It galvanises the oppressed, spurs on the resistance and fires on the revolutionaries. The two part documentary Sound of Freedom goes back to the roots of this music of hope, rebellion, of the mavericks and the oppressed. This is the first time the sound of freedom and protest is being considered in its full historical context; not just within the microcosm of the Sixties and the civil rights movement, but with the narrative arc stretching from the 18th century to the present day. The LA Phil at 100
The Los Angeles Philharmonic is turning 100 and throwing an epic party – the orchestra marks the milestone with public celebrations, education and social-impact initiatives, showcasing and honoring the diversity of Los Angeles. The anniversary documentary portrays the LA Phil and it’s continual creative reinvention on the occasion of this jubilee. The documentary includes a historical part to trace the steps that played a part in where the orchestra stands today, shows the orchestra and Gustavo Dudamel at rehearsals and concerts, captures the work with YOLA and the collaboration with artists like Herbie Hancock and John Williams.
LA Phil 100 – The Centennial Birthday Gala
A century to the day after the orchestra’s first concert on 24th October 1919, the centennial season culminate in a baton-waving conductor’s summit at the Walt Disney Concert Hall with Dudamel, Mehta and Salonen sharing the podium.
