Evgeny Kissin appeared in Salzburg with compositions of the late Romantic and classical modern periods in the Großes Festspielhaus. Since his debut in 1987, the pianist has been a welcome guest at this festival, impressing with the maturity and brilliance of his playing. Kissin loves the dialogue with the audience and the direct power of the concert moment. With his solo recital, Evgeny Kissin presents the audience with a truly remarkable programme, a musical offering which inspires throughout, until the very last note fades away: “In a selection of encores, Kissin delivers the B-flat minor scherzo like a momentous pronouncement, alongside works by Debussy and Mendelssohn, as well as an original composition – he pulls them out of his sleeve, as impulsive and refined as if the concert had just begun.” (Salzburger Nachrichten) “Kissin blossoms into his full greatness” (Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung) PROGRAM Chopin: Nocturne in B major op. 62/1, Impromptus Nos. 1–3 opp. 29, 36 & 51, Scherzo No. 1 & 2, Polonaise op. 53; Berg: Piano Sonata, op. 1; Khrennikov: Dance op. 5/3, 5 Pieces op. 2; Gershwin: Preludes for Piano; Mendelssohn Bartholdy: Andante con moto (“Duetto”) op. 38; Debussy: Clair de lune; Kissin: Dodecaphonic Tango op. 1/2
Herbert von Karajan, Wiener Philharmoniker & Berliner Philharmoniker
The New Year´s Concert from the Golden Hall of the Musikverein Vienna with the Wiener Philharmoniker is always one of the best-selling classical albums each year. In 1987 Herbert von Karajan conducted his only performance of the New Year´s Concert performing famous pieces from Johann Strauss I, Johann Strauss II and Josef Strauss. As soloist in one piece you can hear the legendary soprano Kathleen Battle. The New Year´s Eve Concert 1988 was one of the last concerts that Herbert von Karajan gave with the Berliner Philharmoniker in Berlin. For this concert he invited the 17 year old Evgeny Kissin to his debut with the orchestra. After the concert the press did raving reviews about Kissin´s musicality and technical skills and he proves till today that he is one of the best pianists of our time. It was barely half a year after this concert, on July 16, 1989, that Herbert von Karajan passed away. The present recording thus forms an essential document of two highlights in the last years of the maestro’s life. One of many such documents that have made this great conductor immortal.

New Year’s Eve Concert 1988
Salzburg, August 1988: the 17-year-old Evgeny Kissin meets the legendary conductor Karajan for a private audition, and his performance of a Chopin Fantasy brings the maestro to tears. A few months later, Kissin is at his side to perform Tchaikovsky’s First Piano Concerto as part of a New Year’s Eve concert in Berlin. The success would follow the pianist for years to come: as he put it, “the miracle happened again. Still today, people speak to me about this concert.” (L’Express). Experience the archival film footage of his acclaimed performance from that day, which captures not just the astonishing virtuosity of a young Kissin, but also Karajan’s last appearance with his orchestra the Berliner Philharmoniker. Just seven months later, this “monster of classical music” (France Musique) would pass away at the age of 81.
