Wayne Shorter’s maxim is to reinvent his music in each concert, always again in the radical originality. After his legendary work with the Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers, the Second Miles Davis Quintet and his years with Weather Report in his year 2000, Wayne Shorter formed the Wayne Shorter Quartet, the first formation under his own name. This group provides him with the freedom to reinvent and form his music always again. He sees the celebrated soloists Brian Blade, John Patitucci and Danilo Pérez less as sidemen but rather as equal elements of an organism. They call their method ”Zero Gravity“, an original state of music which they always re-conjure in the interaction, and which is the basis of their explorative journeys into new musical territory. His first solo album, released in 1967, helped secure Norway a spot in international jazz history. In 2013, Jan Garbarek played one of his rare concerts on Norwegian soil, visiting Stavanger Concert Hall and the MaiJazz festival with his group, a concert with intense and beautiful music.

Chick Corea Trio – Live at Malta Jazz Festival
When Chick Corea passed away at the beginning of 2021, the world lost one of its most imaginative and revered musical brains. Corea was utterly unrestricted on the piano, the instrument he began at age four when his trumpeter father introduced him to jazz and dixieland. His Akoustic Band, with bassist John Patitucci and drummer Dave Weckl, was one of the defining piano trios in jazz of the last three decades. The 2018 Malta Jazz Festival in La Valetta was headlined by the Chick Corea Trio and is one of the last taped concerts of Chick Corea.

One highlight of Bay Front Jazz Festival was Gonzalo Rubalcaba ,— another Cuban pianist —, who left Cuba in the early 1990s and now resides in Coral Gables, near downtown Miami — appeared with singer Aymée Nuviola, with whom he made the Grammy-nominated album Viento y Tiempo – Live at Blue Note Tokyo.

Dee Dee Bridgewater is a daring performer of great depth whose singing talents have earned her three Grammy Awards as well as a Tony Award. At Bay Front Jazz Festival, she performed together with “The Memphis Soulphony”.

One of the most visible and winning vibraphonists since the 1960s and part of the Bay Front Festival 2021 is Roy Ayers. Ayers’ 1976 neo-soul album Everybody Loves the Sunshine is one of the most heavily sampled records in hip-hop history.

Winner of six Grammy and three Latin Grammy Awards, the Cuban pianist, composer and arranger Chucho Valdés is the most influential figure in modern Afro-Cuban Jazz. In a rich career spanning sixty years, Chucho has pushed boundaries in pursuit of new expressions in Afro-Cuban music. His influence in the genre is immeasurable, his work establishing the standard by which younger generations set out to create their own.
