Opera

Carmen

Synopsis

A world on the fringes, whose rules are nonconformity and anarchy, symbolised by the masks of the Commedia dell’arte, playful and infernal: these are the starting points for the new production of Carmen, Georges Bizet’s masterpiece and the most performed opera in the world. The bull fight, central element in Carmen, is also part of the history of the arena, which was itself a venue for bullfighting in the 19th century. “In its double and ambiguous nature, it is the ideal place for Carmen”, says director Daniele Menghini. The festival’s musical director Donato Renzetti is on the podium of the “subtle, highly musical” FORM orchestra. Georgian mezzo-soprano Ketevan Kemoklidze performs “downright breathtaking with her clear, soft and yet dominant voice”. At her side: her congenial partner, Egyptian tenor Ragaa Eldin, in the role of Don José, “with velvety tenor melting and vocally supple” (klassik begeistert.de).
