Latvian conductor Andris Nelsons made his first appearance with the RCO to great acclaim in 2008 and has returned regularly ever since. The soloist is the celebrated tenor Ian Bostridge, who is sure to shine brightly in the exceptionally beautiful Les illuminations by BRITTEN, who was born 100 years ago. Paavo Järvi conducts Haydn
The charming, elegant music of Joseph Haydn’s London symphonies is repeatedly punctuated by flashes of tragedy. But no sooner has the listener adjusted to a change of mood than it is over again. It’s these rapid changes of colour that are characteristic of Haydn, a composer of great versatility, depth of thought and wit. The Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen under the direction of its chief conductor Paavo Järvi makes all this audible and tangible. In the second part of their concert series on the London Symphonies at the Vienna Konzerthaus, they perform three more of Haydn’s London Symphonies, the Symphonies No. 93, No. 97 and No. 101 “The Clock”. For the recording of two of the London symphonies, Symphonies Nos. 101 and 103, the orchestra was honoured with the “Orchestra of the year 2023” award from the British classical music
magazine “Grammophone”, one of the most important awards in classical music.
Christian Thielemann conducts Schönberg and Strauss
More than 140 concerts and a multitude of celebrated recordings connect Christian Thielemann with the traditional Viennese orchestra. The live recording of his debut on the podium at the Vienna Musikverein almost 23 years ago promptly became a reference recording. On the programme then as now: Richard Strauss’ monumental Eine Alpensinfonie (An Alpine Symphony). This work, often regarded as the final and climax of the “symphonic poem” genre, is juxtaposed with Arnold Schönberg’s probably most famous tonal composition, the orchestral version of the string sextet Verklärte Nacht (Transfigured Night). “A truly persuasive performance.” (The New York Times)
Salzburg Festival 2024: Simon Rattle conducts Mahler 6
The concert is the culmination of the 2024 Salzburg Festival with the BRSO and Simon Rattle taking the stage. Mahler’s Sixth Symphony, known for its tragic and dramatic elements, marks the end of the festival at the Großes Festspielhaus with a symphonic performance that ranges from tranquil countryside depictions to profoundly emotional moments.
