Set to Tchaikovsky’s Sixth Symphony, Martin Schläpfer’s highly expressive choreography offers glimpses into the composer’s biography, echoes of his great ballets, Russian motives and reflections on our time. “A precisely danced, emotionally charged creation from a single mould, which he concludes touchingly with a Handel aria” (Kronenzeitung). “This is Martin Schläpfer at his best (…) classical ballet that is nevertheless entirely contemporary” (NZZ)
Tchaikovsky, Swan Lake (Schwanensee)
To mark the 50th anniversary of Rudolf Nureyev’s legendary production of Tschaikovsky’s ballet in 1964, the Vienna State Opera is now reviving it with new sets and costumes designed by Julia Spinatelli, whose concept is inspired by the fairytale phantasy world of King Ludwig II incorporating simple, painted backdrops and few accessories, to present a new Swan Lake.
BBC Proms 2016: Mirga Gražinyte-Tyla conducts Mozart & Tchaikovsky
The City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra presents its new Music Director Mirga Gražinyte-Tyla at the BBC Proms. Gražinyte-Tyla is not only the successor of Sir Simon Rattle and Andris Nelsons at the CBSO, but also the first female conductor to take over one of the world’s leading orchestras. Her talent and musicality shine bright in the concert’s centre piece, the “spellbinding and bewitching” (The Guardian) song cycle Let me tell you by Hans Abrahamsen, performed by no less than Barbara Hannigan, for whom the piece was written in the first place. In the second half of the concert, Gražinyte-Tyla and the CBSO explore Tchaikovsky’s dramatic Fourth Symphony – “technically impeccable and just that bit more vivid than usual” (The Guardian). A Johann Strauss Celebration – The Wiener Symphoniker in Trieste
For decades, the Wiener Symphoniker has welcomed spring with a bouquet of lively melodies. This edition goes international as the orchestra and chief conductor Petr Popelka ring in the season in Trieste with works by Johann Strauss, the composer of the year, but also pieces by Franz Lehár, Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky and Erich Korngold.

Christmas Special: Christmas in the Erzgebirge
Christmas in the Erzgebirge is one of Saxony’s most treasurable cultural traditions. The region’s centuries old mining industry has produced a unique response to Christmas, which is celebrated by means of numerous customs in which music plays a decisive role. The Renaissance town of Marienberg at the very heart of the historic Erzgebirge is the setting for a concert of classical and seasonal works performed by Germany’s only classical orchestra made up exclusively of wind instruments, the Sächsische Bläserphilharmonie (Saxon Wind Philharmonic).
