The legendary tenors José Carreras, Plácido Domingo and Luciano Pavarotti, together with conductor Zubin Mehta, celebrated the finale to soccer’s 1994 World Cup with a live concert described as “probably the biggest single musical event in history”. Brought together for the 1990 World Cup in Italy, The 3 Tenors and Mehta joined forces again, this time in Los Angeles’ Dodger Stadium on July 16th 1994 with the Los Angeles Philharmonic and the Los Angeles Music Center Opera Chorus, to perform a selection of operatic arias and international favourites specially orchestrated by composer/arranger Lalo Schifrin. The result is an outstanding film, reflecting a unique event, featuring three legendary performers who share a united passion for opera and football.

Is there such a thing as a Karajan “sound”? Beginning toward the end of his career, Herbert von Karajan began to attract criticism for having pushed his particular obsession clarity of an orchestra’s sound to the extreme. This New Year’s concert with the Berliner Philharmoniker is typical of his later interpretive approach: Karajan draws a particular sound out of the orchestra, but he and his musicians still take care to modulate that sound according to the repertoire they are playing. Their clear and precise performance of Weber’s brilliant Freischütz Overture is followed by their hypnotic string sound in Puccini and Leoncavallo’s two Intermezzi, culminating in the progressive and determined build-up of Ravel’s Boléro.

The Neuschwanstein Castle Festival kicks off with a passionate journey through the world of opera: the high-calibre chamber music ensemble CHAARTS Chamber Artists from Switzerland already wowed audiences in multiple occasions. Together with Jonathan Tetelman and Chelsea Zurflüh, they present works from Tosca, La Traviata, Romeo et Juliette and The Magic Flute, among others. The timbre, the extraordinary volume of his tenor voice and his charisma can now be marvelled at on the world’s biggest stages. “A star par excellence”, wrote the New York Times about Tetelman, while the Tagesspiegel added ist unanimously enthusiastic review of his international audience with “balsamic verve”.
