The acclaimed Dutch string quartet plays two works by Beethoven: The Cavatina movement of String Quartet No. 13 in B flat major Op. 130 and String Quartet in B flat major Op. 133 (Grosse Fuge).
Julia Fischer plays Martinu Violin Concerto
This concert was a quite special occasion for Julia Fischer, who was presented with the Martinu Medal of the Bohuslav Martinu Foundation following the concert in the Rudolfinum in Prague. Julia Fischer had just thrilled her audience with her interpretation of Martinu’s Violin Concerto. “Technically everything was perfect with the utmost fullness of sound. Thanks to her rich and full sound, which she deployed with great taste and imagination, Fischer displayed exceptional talent for the Czech and Slav repertoire. It was a serious matinee, at which Fischer brought out virtuoso ornamentation seldom to be heard in this context.” Such was the admiring press comment. Fischer’s solo performance was the centrepiece of a concert that also featured works by Dvorák (Concert Overture) and Beethoven (Symphony No. 6), which wonderfully portray the world of nature.
Andris Nelsons and Yefim Bronfman at the Lucerne Festival
For his tone poem ‘Scheherazade’ Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov chose four episodes from the famous 1001 nights tales collection to set, using glowing instrumental colors and exotically tinged ornaments. Andris Nelsons, the young and charismatic star conductor from Latvia, will be sure to inspire a veritable sonic intoxication with the wonderful
Concertgebouw Orchestra. In contrast, the first part of the concert will strike a heroic note when Yefim Bronfman, whose virtuosity knows no limits, plays Beethoven’s Fifth Piano Concerto.
Making of “Fidelio”
Thunderous applause and loud cries of “bravo” greeted the premiere of Ludwig van Beethoven’s “Fidelio” at the inaugural performance of the first opera season in Valencia’s new Palau de les Arts on 25 October 2006. Attending the stellar performance in architect Santiago Calatrava’s breathtaking theater complex was Queen Sofía of Spain, who added to the glamour of the event. With this spectacular production directed by Pierluigi Pier’Alli, Valencia has put itself back on the map of the international opera world. Calatrava’s sweeping structure recalls the organic forms of Catalonia’s “Modernisme” style. Hints of Gaudì and traces of Gothic arches and nave-like spaces project a feeling of openness and freedom. Not surprisingly, “Fidelio” was chosen to inaugurate the theater’s main concert hall – an about freedom set in Spain, and in which the contrast between the darkness of Florestan’s dungeon and the light of justice and love embodied by Leonore is both heard in the music and seen on the stage.
Lahav Shani conducts the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra
In his inaugural performance as the new Music Director of the Rotterdam Philharmonic, Lahav Shani leads the orchestra in Shostakovich’s Fifth Symphony, a work from 1937 that returned the composer into Stalin’s good political graces after being denounced by the Soviet regime. And a renowned Beethoven interpreter with hundreds of recordings of the composer’s music to his name, Daniel Barenboim performs Beethoven’s Third Piano Concerto, a startlingly dramatic work inspired by Mozart’s own in C Minor (K. 491). Beethoven, Missa Solemnis
With this performance of the Missa solemnis Nikolaus Harnoncourt, Honorary Guest Conductor of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, once more attained the status of a living legend, due mostly to his wide-ranging expertise of music from the Baroque and Classical era. The highly acclaimed soloists are Marlis Petersen (Soprano), twice the singer of the year by the renowned Opernwelt magazine, Elisabeth Kulman (Alto), Werner Güra (Tenor), winner of the BBC Music Magazine Award for the best vocal performance, and Gerald Finley (Bass), Grammy-Awardwinner for the best opera recording. They are accompanied by the famous Netherlands Radio Choir.
Currentzis conducts Beethoven No. 9
Teodor Currentzis and his musicAeterna present their first recording of Beethoven’s 9th symphony, produced at the Megaron Concert Hall in Athens. The history of the Ninth’s interpretations includes 200 years of staggering revelations and lingering stagnation. Performed by the musicAeterna orchestra and choir as well as stellar guest soloists under the baton of Teodor Currentzis, Beethoven’s opus magnum acquires the original poignancy and energy of a recent discovery.
Barenboim conducts Beethoven & Tchaikovsky
In the course of their Buenos Aires residency Barenboim and his West-Eastern Divan Orchestra together with “honorary member of the Divan” Martha Argerich, gave “a concert that proved to be the hottest ticket in the festival.” Opening with Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 2, the orchestra confirmed that “it is, simply, one of the great orchestras in the world today” while “Argerich proved again that she has lost none of her magical tone or perfect articulation” (Buenos Aires Herald). In Tchaikovsky’s emotionally tempestuous Symphony No. 4, Barenboim’s reading “rose to all the big moments” (Buenos Aires Herald). As a surprise encore, Argerich and Barenboim played a two-piano arrangement of the sweetly nostalgic Bailecito by their compatriot Carlos Guastavino.
