It is one of the most dramatic thrillers in the history of opera: Giacomo Puccini’s Tosca becomes a musical highlight with two much acclaimed role debuts of star singers Piotr Beczała and Carlos Álvarez at the Vienna State Opera in the revived, historic staging of Margarethe Wallmann. Tosca contains some of opera’s most iconic music as the heart-wrenching “E lucevan le stelle“. Beczała (“one of the extraordinary singers of our time“ Der Standard) performs the aria and the whole role with beguiling singing and was celebrated by the audience with enthusiastic ovations. At his side is Armenian soprano Karine Babajanyan as Primadonna Floria Tosca, making her house debut at Vienna’s State Opera. Carlos Álvarez sings and performs Scarpia with noblesse and convincing evilness. Marco Armiliato conducts with love for detail and, at the same time, full of energy the brilliantly playing Orchester der Wiener Staatsoper .
