French film and stage director Christophe Honoré presents Puccini’s verismo masterpiece as an opera about opera and brings the legendary prima donna Catherine Malfitano back on stage. Tosca is one of the most popular operas ever, a story about love and sacrifice, jealousy and murder, packed into a suspenseful drama of passionate musical outbursts and flowing lyricism. In In Aix-en-Provence Honoré transposes the plot into the present time and adds a new role of a retired opera diva, played by Catherine Malfitano who was undoubtedly one of the most famous Toscas in opera history. As her student appears the young American soprano Angel Blue who gives a highly acclaimed debut as Floria Tosca “gloriously” with a “warm and golden yet immensly powerful voice” (New York Times). At her side sings Joseph Calleja, one of the top tenors of his generation, Tosca’s lover, the painter Cavaradossi, with melting lyricism and fierce passion. The Russian baritone Alexey Markov captivates with rich and elegant timbre as a commanding and mafia-like Scarpia. “Puccini’s opera triumphed in Aix-en-Provence under the baton of Daniele Rustioni” (Le Monde) who inspires the Orchestre de l’Opéra de Lyon to a poetical, differentiated interpretation.
