Beyond Perfection – The pianist Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli

Synopsis

As stubborn as Beethoven, a bon vivant like Mozart and virtuoso like Liszt. Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli’s uncompromising approach and his unsurpassed excellence at the piano have made him a myth. To mark Michelangeli’s 100th birthday, there is now the first large cinematic portrait of the unconventional keyboard titanium. Michelangeli is one of the over-virtuosi class. And even among the many great pianists of the 20th century he is considered an exception. As an artist mimosa, Michelangeli is traded among experts – hypersensitive, super-sensitive and extremely moody. It is said that he cancelled more concerts than he actually gave. Self-critical to self-denial, Michelangeli spends years rehearsing the same pieces and rethinking interpretations. His way to the Olympus recalls the work of Sisyphos. With a portrait that has been researched for over 30 years, a comprehensive and multi-faceted picture of the legendary man becomes possible for the first time. The film with its partially unpublished material closes a decisive gap. The other "piano giants of the century", such as Gould, Horowitz and Richter, have already been portrayed on film. Yet, just not Michelangeli.
