The Belgian dancer, choreographer and multi-talent Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui interprets Christoph Willibald Gluck’s late Baroque opera Alceste as an impressive symbiosis between dance and music. Alceste is a tragic piece about sacrificing life for love, here in Munich performed in the revised Paris version from 1776 where Gluck has revalued especially the ballet music. Cherkaoui – since 2015 director of the Royal Ballet of Flanders – has worked with top artists across disciplines like superstar Beyoncé for whom he choreographed her legendary music video “Apes**t” with over a 180 million clicks alone on youtube. The superb dancers of the Belgian Company Eastman, Antwerp perform Gluck’s score physically, creating a fine and stringent aesthetics of “beautiful images” (Opernwelt). The singers cast is compelling right up to the small roles. Dorothea Röschmann with her “inimitable charisma” (Financial Times) and Charles Castronovo impress in the roles of the self-sacrificing royal couple. Conductor Antonello Manacorda and the Bayerisches Staatsorchester transpose the powerful drama of Gluck phenomenally, the chorus of the Bayerische Staatsoper “sings magnificent” (Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung).
